In the neighborhood (“sestiere”) of Cannaregio you can find one of the oldest Jewish ghettos of all Europe. The Jewish community has been found in Venice since the 12th Century, but during the 14th Century they were deprived of housing in the city and many moved to the nearby areas until a special area – called Cannaregio ghetto – was defined for them to live in.
